Why Flow Rate Alone Is Not Enough
Two wastewater streams with the same flow can present different separation duties. DAF selection considers both hydraulic flow and solids loading; a capacity figure without wastewater characteristics is an incomplete design basis. Siltbuster’s DAF overview identifies both factors in equipment sizing.
DAF uses small air bubbles to help separate suitable suspended contaminants. Stable oil emulsions may require chemical conditioning before effective separation. The need for chemicals should therefore be assessed for the actual wastewater rather than assumed from the equipment name. Veolia’s wastewater treatment handbook
Prepare a Clear Inquiry Package
The following is a buyer’s checklist for organizing an RFQ, not a substitute for a process design.
| Parameter | Specification | Unit | Notes / design basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wastewater source | Production process, individual or mixed streams, and relevant cleaning operations | — | — |
| Operating pattern | Average and peak flow in m³/h, daily volume in m³/day, operating hours and batch discharge periods | — | — |
| Available analysis | Dated results for TSS, oil and grease, COD, pH and temperature; identify missing or non-representative samples | — | — |
| Treatment objective | Required DAF outlet condition and the downstream process receiving that water | — | — |
| Existing treatment | Screens, equalization, dosing or separation already installed, with available drawings and operating records | — | — |
| Site interfaces | Space, inlet and outlet levels, utilities, electrical requirements and control connections | — | — |
| Procurement scope | Equipment and services required, destination, requested documentation and target schedule | — | — |
Distinguish measured data from estimates. If a laboratory sample represents only one production batch, state that limitation rather than presenting it as the full operating range.
Specify What the Supplier Must Include
Ask each bidder to mark every item as included, excluded or requiring clarification:
- DAF vessel, flotation equipment and sludge removal arrangement.
- Air dissolution or white-water system and associated pumps.
- Chemical preparation, dosing and mixing equipment, where required.
- Instruments, control panel and external control interfaces.
- Access platforms, interconnecting piping and installation work.
- Start-up support, spare parts and inspection documentation.
Clarify responsibility for process selection separately from fabrication and equipment supply. A quote for a vessel or skid should not be treated as a complete treatment-system commitment.
For related package boundaries, review our industrial wastewater treatment equipment supply process.
Include the Sludge Outlet in the Discussion
The RFQ should identify where collected flotation sludge will go, who supplies transfer equipment and how the downstream handling scope is defined. Where dewatering is included, provide the relevant sludge data rather than selecting equipment from wastewater flow alone.
Our sludge dewatering equipment guide explains the information used to review that separate duty.
Compare Proposals Against One Acceptance Basis
Ask bidders to distinguish preliminary estimates from contractual commitments. Any proposed outlet target should state the influent conditions and operating assumptions to which it applies.
Before placing an order, agree on the inspection and testing scope, sampling locations, responsibilities and documents required for acceptance. Clarify which checks occur at the factory and which require operation with actual wastewater on site.
A compact comparison sheet should show:
- Confirmed design inputs and unresolved assumptions.
- Included equipment and customer-side responsibilities.
- Utility and chemical-consumption estimates, with their calculation basis.
- Inspection, testing and acceptance arrangements.
- Commercial exclusions and items awaiting technical confirmation.
DAF System Sourcing FAQ
Can I request a quotation before all laboratory results are available?
Yes. Send the information already available and ask for a preliminary scope review. List missing data clearly. Final configuration and any performance commitment should be resolved through the responsible technical review.
Is chemical dosing always required for DAF?
No universal answer applies. Chemical requirements depend on the wastewater and the separation objective. Request the proposed conditioning basis and supporting test information where relevant.
Does a DAF quotation include sludge dewatering?
Do not assume so. Specify sludge collection, transfer and dewatering as separate scope items, then ask the supplier to identify what is included.
Who should approve the final equipment selection?
Identify the responsible process engineer, equipment supplier and customer approver in writing. Manufacturing responsibility and process-performance responsibility should be clear before order placement.
