Distinguish the Two Treatment Tasks
For gaseous pollutants, wet scrubbing uses absorption: a suitable liquid takes up compounds from the gas stream. Packed beds provide contact area between gas and liquid. The liquid chemistry must suit the target compounds. EPA guidance on gaseous-pollutant scrubbers
Particle collection is a different task. Particles are transferred from the gas stream into liquid, and collection depends on the contact mechanism, particle size and energy used. Equipment described simply as a “wet scrubber” should not be assumed to perform every particle-removal duty. EPA guidance on particulate wet scrubbers
For a mixed stream, ask the process engineer whether one device can meet both objectives or whether separate stages are needed.
Provide a Pollutant-Specific Design Basis
Instead of requesting a tower from airflow alone, organize the inquiry around these questions:
| Input | What the proposal should clarify |
|---|---|
| Pollutants | Which gaseous compounds, dust or mist are present, and what measurements are available? |
| Inlet conditions | What are the normal and peak flow, concentration, temperature and moisture conditions? |
| Flow reference | Is airflow stated at actual or specified reference conditions, and on a wet or dry basis? |
| Outlet objectives | What target applies to each pollutant, and how will it be measured? |
| Operating pattern | Which batch changes, start-ups or interruptions must the design accommodate? |
| Existing equipment | What collection ducts and upstream or downstream treatment are already installed? |
Mark estimated values clearly. If particle-size information or compound analysis is unavailable, ask whether the missing data prevents final selection.
Review the Liquid Circuit and Droplet Separation
The inquiry should cover the liquid circuit as well as the tower. Ask who supplies recirculation, makeup water, chemical dosing, drainage and blowdown connections.
Wet gas–liquid contact can entrain contaminated droplets. Mist eliminators or other entrainment separators remove those droplets before discharge. Their arrangement and maintenance access belong in the equipment review. EPA guidance on particulate wet scrubbers
Request a written description of where blowdown and collected residues will go. Confirm the customer-side treatment or disposal arrangements instead of assuming that the scrubber quotation resolves them.
Agree on Monitoring and Acceptance
For gas-absorption systems, EPA identifies pressure differential, liquid flow and liquid condition among relevant performance-monitoring parameters. The appropriate measurements depend on the process. EPA guidance on gaseous-pollutant scrubbers
For procurement, distinguish three questions:
- What instruments are included?
- What operating conditions must be maintained?
- What test demonstrates that the agreed outlet objectives have been met?
Ask the bidder to identify sampling locations, test conditions, responsibilities and required records. A list of instruments does not by itself define an acceptance test.
Compare Supply Boundaries Before Comparing Prices
Have each bidder identify the included vessel, internals, pumps, fan, ducts, instruments and controls. Clarify access platforms, installation, commissioning support and spare parts separately.
For each major item, record who supplies it, who approves the technical specification and where the supplier’s responsibility ends.
Our odor control equipment page explains the supply routes. FRP and PP scrubbers outside the family-owned factory’s confirmed scope are supplied through selected specialist manufacturing partners.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one scrubber treat both gas and particles?
It may be possible, but both duties require assessment. Ask for a configuration supported by the actual pollutant profile and separate outlet objectives.
Is water always the correct scrubbing liquid?
Do not assume so. Ask the responsible engineer to confirm the liquid and any reagent requirements for the target compounds.
Should every proposal include a mist eliminator?
Ask the supplier to show how entrained droplets are separated and how that equipment is inspected and maintained. The arrangement should be explicit.
Does the quotation include blowdown treatment?
Not necessarily. State the blowdown destination and treatment responsibilities as separate scope items.
