Direct Answer
If a water treatment project will be built in phases, define the initial duty and the future duty separately. Ask the supplier to explain which equipment can remain, which items require additions or replacement, and what site provisions must be prepared.
“Modular” does not by itself confirm that capacity can be increased without changes elsewhere in the system. Request a written expansion concept tied to stated raw-water conditions, output requirements and equipment interfaces.
Application Scenarios
For a camp or remote work site expected to grow, provide the initial water requirement and the anticipated later requirement. Identify which figures are confirmed and which are planning assumptions.
For an industrial facility adding a new production area, describe any changes in water use, operating schedule or required product-water quality.
For an existing treatment installation, supply available equipment records and drawings. Do not assume that adding another module is sufficient without reviewing the system boundary.
Selection Factors
Define Two Operating Duties
Describe Phase 1 and the proposed future phase using the same units and measurement boundary.
Include required output, operating hours, raw-water information and product-water criteria for each phase. If future requirements are uncertain, state the assumptions and request that the proposal identify their limits.
A future output target should not be presented as a guaranteed capability of the initial package unless the supplier has confirmed it.
Identify Shared Equipment
Ask which equipment serves individual modules and which serves the installation as a whole.
Depending on the proposed configuration, shared items may include pretreatment, tanks, pumps, disinfection equipment, cleaning facilities or controls. Have the supplier identify the applicable items rather than assuming a standard arrangement.
For each shared item, request a statement of whether it supports the future duty, needs modification or requires separate review.
Define Physical and Control Interfaces
Request a drawing showing the proposed location of future equipment and the intended connection points.
Ask what expansion would require in terms of pipework, electrical supply, controls and maintenance access. Identify whether future connections are included now, reserved in the design or excluded from the initial supply.
Do not treat an empty area on a layout as confirmation that all expansion requirements have been addressed.
Phased-Project Comparison Table
| Item | Phase 1 definition | Future-phase question |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment duty | Initial output and operating basis | What later duty has been assessed? |
| Raw water | Initial source and available analysis | Would source changes require a new review? |
| Process equipment | Included modules and treatment stages | What must be added, changed or replaced? |
| Shared equipment | Items serving the whole installation | Which items support the future duty? |
| Utilities | Initial connection requirements | What additional site capacity is needed? |
| Controls | Included operating configuration | What control changes or interfaces are required? |
| Site layout | Initial equipment and access areas | Where will new equipment and connections fit? |
| Implementation | Initial installation scope | What work and interruption would expansion involve? |
This table is an RFQ framework, not a confirmed expansion design.
Ask How Expansion Would Be Implemented
Request a description of the work needed to move from the initial configuration to the proposed future configuration.
Ask which activities require the existing equipment to stop, which prerequisites must be completed and who is responsible for the work. Do not assume uninterrupted water supply during installation or commissioning.
Have the supplier distinguish an assessed expansion arrangement from a general statement that additional equipment could be supplied later.
Separate Current Supply from Future Options
The quotation should distinguish:
- Equipment included in the initial order.
- Provisions included now for later expansion.
- Future equipment outside the current order.
- Work requiring another design review.
- Assumptions that remain unconfirmed.
A future option is not an included deliverable unless the order explicitly states otherwise. Request that the equipment list and drawings use the same scope definitions.
RFQ Checklist
Provide:
- Project location and intended water use.
- Initial required output and operating schedule.
- Anticipated future output and its planning basis.
- Available raw-water information.
- Product-water requirements for each phase.
- Existing equipment and drawings, if applicable.
- Available space and utility information.
- Constraints on interruption during expansion.
- Responsibilities for future installation and commissioning.
- The information that remains provisional.
Customized based on raw water conditions, required capacity and project requirements.
FAQ
Does modular equipment guarantee easy expansion?
No. Ask for a project-specific explanation covering process equipment, shared items, utilities, controls and site interfaces.
Can the future system be assessed using only a larger daily volume?
That is incomplete. Also define the operating schedule, raw-water conditions, product-water requirements and measurement boundary.
Should every future component be purchased in Phase 1?
This guide does not prescribe that choice. Ask the supplier to distinguish necessary initial provisions from equipment that can be assessed and ordered later.
Can expansion be completed without stopping supply?
That must be confirmed for the proposed arrangement. Request the implementation sequence and identify any required interruption.
